 The mitzvah of tevilas
keilim, immersion of new utensils, is derived from the Torah, Numbers 31:23. This mitzvah is obligatory when one acquires utensils from a non-Jew, which have direct contact with food. These utensils require immersion in a kosher mikvah. Most commentaries note that in many instances it is a Torah requirement and it is prohibited to use such utensils without first immersing them. The obligation covers utensils made of metal and glass. Wood, paper,
and non-glazed earthenware do not require immersion.
